Couple gives birth to quadruplets, is shocked when they’re two sets of identical twins

For as much dedication as they take, newborn babies also bring a lot of joy to the world around them. That’s probably why Josh and Miranda Crawford, a couple living in Charlotte, North Carolina wanted another baby despite already having their two-year-old daughter Jocelyn. What they didn’t know is that they were in for a bigger surprise than they thought.

To help with some fertility issues the Crawfords were having, Miranda decided to try in-vitro fertilization. During the process, two fertilized eggs were implanted into her uterus. Nobody expected them both to take—and to both split into two distinct sets of identical twins.

The result was two baby boys and two baby girls named James, Jackson, Mia and Madison, respectively. To have just one set of twins is already quite rare, with a probability of around 1% of all pregnancies. The odds of having two sets of twins at the same time are astronomical. “I remember thinking, ‘I cannot have four babies,” Miranda says. “‘I can’t do that.’”

Although the family has said their house is essentially a “controlled chaos” situation, the truth is both parents couldn’t be better suited to care for the new additions to the family. That’s because both Miranda and Josh are professional nurses, a very valuable skill set in a baby-filled household.

While they admit their situation can seem hectic and overwhelming, the family is still counting their blessings. All four little babies are perfectly healthy and Miranda was able to carry them to term, all despite maybe the fullest pregnant belly pictures anyone has ever seen. “We’re still just going day by day,” she says.

Aside from the sheer uniqueness of the Crawfords’ situation, this story is also an adorable reminder of how unpredictable life can be. Despite our best laid plans, the universe can still throw us a curveball. In this case, the Crawfords were able to deal with it with grace and love.

For their part, Josh will be picking up more hours while Miranda takes some time off to tend to their children.
